Riverside Hockey Club in Durban North

The Riverside Hockey Club is situated at the Riverside Sports Club at 12 Radar Drive in Durban North.

Riverside Hockey Club in Durban NorthRiverside Hockey Club primarily originated in the course of 2010 once Durban North Hockey Club changed its name to associate the hockey club with the increasingly popular Riverside Sports Club. Durban North Hockey Club itself was born in 2000 from the merger of the Glenwood Old Boys and Crusaders Hockey clubs.

Prior to the union both clubs possessed a proud history, with Glenwood men’s and ladies teams featuring in the premier league from the late 1950s. Crusaders hockey saw a men’s team in the premier league in 1989, with the ladies being promoted to the topmost level in 1992. Both clubs won Premier League titles in their zenith.

Riverside Hockey Club in Durban North has produced players at the peak level with a lot of mens’ and womens’ representatives of the South African mens’ and womens’ teams. Marcia Marescia (existing women’s side captain), Kerry Bee, Gillian Daniels, Michele MacNaughton, Jacqui Geyser, and Caryn Bentley have been representatives for the South African ladies team, while Ken Forbes, Gregg Clark, David Staniforth, Kevin MacNaughton, Wayne Phillips, Lloyd Norris-Jones, Bruce Grant, Mike Botha, Marvin Harper, Lloyd Madsen, and Tim Drummond have made appearances the men at either indoor or outdoor hockey. The latter five hockey players are current players of the Riverside 1st squad.

The juniors have obtained comparable achievements, with Riverside Hockey Club in Durban North producing SA hockey players at the under 14, 16, 18 and 21 levels yearly.

At the moment, Riverside Hockey Club in Durban North continues this proud history, with the potency of the riverside hockey club existing in its intensity – 10 teams in total (five men and five ladies) all of which play in the KZN Premier Leagues as well as junior and masters (over 35) teams.

Riverside Hockey Club caters for players age 5 – 60+ and it is at present the only club in South Africa with 2 astro turfs.

With the club’s excellent junior programme it’s anticipated that the roll of honour listed above will expand rapidly within the next ten years.

Tuesday and Thursday nights see both the men’s and ladies teams practising on cutting-edge astro turf. New players will always be welcome!
